A trendsetter's royalties
I once knew this cat.
Made a crazy living off nothing much - I figured he either owned a drug cartel that he kept at arms length or landed an insane amount of love from one or two of the billion dollar women he happened to find himself with at the end of the night.
Has a place here and there in old Sydney town, and I happened upon him as he was a landlord who claimed the money from me for staying at a Darling Harbour apartment one New Year's Eve. Long story short, he ended up joining us in the midst of the fireworks.
Having noticed I was rummaging my way through Europe a while back, he decided to let me in on a housewarming he was having for a recently acquired property in Barcelona. Seeing that it wasn't long after the property bubble there got its card pulled, I decided to rock on up with a question that needed to be answered.
Specifically, I wanted to ask why he was buying in far off lands where the properties were a total write-off.
Far from being annoyed, unapproachable or unresponsive, he answered accordingly by telling me how he made a living. "I'm a trend speculator. I tell major department stores where to best invest in fashion and when. All that I know to this day, I got from consulting big Australian stores for getting into 1980's fashion. Now its the nineties, and everything else the hate-ies, I've gotta hold onto what I've got a bit more you know? I simply didn't expect it to come through like this."
I was later told he used to work in Public Relations for the Australian Government until he got kicked out for what Senorita 'illard would call questionable fashion sense.
Questionable indeed.
