Getting Shanghai'd
July 9th 2007 07:47
This is a view I may never see again.
Its the last remaining shantytown in Shanghai, at the west end (I think) of the Bund.
What will happen to these people? From here it seems like an intense and heritage-style community (The Rocks?) but any money they've been kicked out of their homes already. Sydney got lucky with The Rocks as in the 1970's a state govt in the pocket of big time developers intended to make it like the rest of the city.
The construction companies and their worker's union boycotted it, and hence it remains its beautiful old heritage-listed self.
I doubt the same will, or can, happen in China.
Starting to think workers rights is alot bigger than my workplace

oooh it`s a tough one this struggle. Thing is that the more money you pump into the economy the less it`s actual value is - will there ever be a happy medium???
Shantytowns in Africa are amazing - people will build houses out of anything they find one guy even built his next to a traffic light and he managed to use the electricity to the ight to power his home!
we should go back to bartering!

You always have a story to tell Ashie, and somehow or other its always relevant. Although it can seem like we're telling the same story over and over again, just in different environments, you always keep a fresh face.
Thou ist more optimistic than thee...
