Rickie Lee Jones

That's the way its gonna be, little darlin
We'll go ridin on the horses....
You know how it goes. Perhaps one of the greatest pub singalongs ever written but it really has nothing to do with Daryl Braithwaite. Ms. Jones wrote that song, about her daughter wanting to ride the carousel. I don't have that song, but instead let's take a look at her first album. The self-titled one. Yep, 1979. And not even punk music.
Her style crosses from RnB and funk to folk and pop. I'm amazed at her ability to retain youth while making songs for people to retire, I mean die retire, to. Seriously she has a deep understanding of how to make you feel, and she'll dictate between upbeat stimulation or downtempo, hearty ballads.
I think this is the only album I have which has what you'd call 'ballads' on it.
What attracted me to this album was seeing the clip for 'Young Blood'. It grabbed me by the heartstrings and just started plucking, you know? Still, there were few pleasant surprises as I found it is probably the best song on the album, followed closely by 'Chuck E's in Love'.
Rickie has had her ups and downs, despite a headstrong career in the fickle industry of female singer/songwriters (ie she gets away with not needing sex appeal and just being a talented entertainer). Having had addictions to both cocaine and heroin, one must wonder what is in the cigarillo she's smoking on the cover.
Now... how many albums do I have with an artist smoking on the cover? Huh, expect one on the cover of 'Rock Against Rudd' hitting the shelves wherever bad music can be found.
Rickie Lee Jones does good music. Just that it possibly steps a bit too far over the border into mainstream to be a heavy player in my collection.
3 out of 5. Maybe more as I get older.

Intended to see her 3 years ago but she cancelled.
I think I can guarantee it would be one hell of a show for whoever has had the chance...
