Societal Materialism
"Caught up in the silk web, of material." [GZA/Genius]
Cash, clothes, cars. Maybe property. In a generation which is seeing capitalism as accepted as its nephew, democracy, this is what many people spend their spare time thinking about. And it is also commonplace for the shunning of communism and its nephew, dictatorship.
The three C's can be enjoyable to mull over, but they seem to eventually lead to little fulfilment in the grand scheme of things. And the more you have, the more you realise, and the less you eventually want.
"Necessity, that's all we need, not the feel for materiality." {Me}
As far as wages go, I am on the wrong side of the tracks. Always have been. So how do I find myself thinking about cash, clothes and cars? Let's just say I'm a prudent financier. I am strict with my budget (most of the time). Hence, there is a bit of money in the bank - which, until disaster strikes, will always be there.
Then again, I could go buy a car.
Nah.
And I've got all the clothes I need. Unless I find myself in desperart (sic) need of a new style. Or maybe I just need some reassurance like a pic in the fashion pages of the local tabloid paper. Or stylespace.com (hint,hint).
"Livin in the corners of the modest" [Malik B]
That is where I always have lived. UNTIL.... Bondi boomed. And Sydney developed a sort of synchronised pretentiousness (was that always there?). This has prompted a move from Bondi to the inner west, sometimes Melbourne.
But not me. This is still the corner in which I live, and I play it modest. I'm hoping the pretention wears out before I do. Until that time, I'm gonna keep on daydreamin about moving to Sao Paulo.
