The Travelling Interviewee
Welcome, fellow students and teachers. Shall we begin?
"Its okay, I'll be packing heat"
That's the thought running through my mind when I plan to travel outside my comfort zone. Something reassuring. Its strange how Mascot, roughly 20km from my home, isn't within the safety blanket carrying area, while Katoomba being a further 100km away, is.
So arrive, 5 minutes early why not?
"..to go get money, why not/ down at Sesame St, the dope spot." I hype myself up for the interview by pondering these lyrics to Ice Cube's "Gangsta Fairytale." The Block in Redfern is kinda like Sesame St, come to think of it...
This area is relatively new to me, and after much jockulating and postulating in the interview room, I figure to catch the bus into the city, 10 km away. But a new song is beginning to hype me up.
"Walk around, walk everywhere/ From Regents Park, down to Trafalgar Square/If you're thinking, that's my home ground/Yes I'm telling you 'bout, Dungeon Town." (London Posse)
Walk everywhere. The idea sparked the energy in me to attempt to walk it into the city, but I lasted 3km before I figured I was getting sunburnt.
As I hail the bus driver: "Hey boss, how much to the city from here?" I get back into velocity-buzz mode with no qualms. Looking out the window, getting closer to the city, I realise its the same scene. Ultimately square office blocks and cafes, warehouses and souped up residences. Why isn't this place in my comfort zone? It seems just as much part of the city as the CBD itself, it definitely has expanded into new territory.
I think I'll be safe taking my security blanket* next time I'm there.
*Only free range organic metaphors were used in the making of this blog. Security blanket = white collar shirt smelling of Napisan
