To leave a trail
We all do it.
What was happening then won't happen again, but the scars and vinegar provided leave a presence we thought might have been left behind. Some things are harder to shake off than one may initially predict.
To pick up on someone's scent, follow it to the point of noting it probably isn't worth following, can be a loss for the follower and extra vinegar for the scented wound.
Some will avoid the whole re-enactment and head to no mans land just to give the trail a place of rest, without the confusion that comes with dense populations and the conflicting components within. Some will stealth off to trusted sources as to cleanse and forget about it.
Others will let the leaves fall and keep their head on, for some that is the only option. And a loose trail is a good thing for those who aren't expecting a follow through. Ignorance in innocence can be an obvious option for those of us who prefer to have everyone else forget about it.
Call it a blazing sunset chased down by a full moon. Initially attracted, the whole scene will disappear into howling and playing blind.
The next trail crossing isn't too far. But its what's around the corner that counts.
